8 proven ways to minimize the stress in your life and limit the
side effects -The Mayo Clinic
1) Think positively
Studies indicate that optimism or pessimism may affect your
quality of life. Optimism enables you to cope better with stressful situations,
likely reducing the effects of stress on your body.
2) Change your emotional response
Managing stress doesn't mean eliminating stressors from your
life. It means developing positive strategies for dealing with stress to avoid
negative consequences. Think about stress as your reaction to an event, rather
than the event itself. This makes it easier to identify healthy ways to manage
stress. Even though you can't control some of the stressors in your life, you
can control your response to them.
3) Embrace spirituality
Certain tools to reduce stress are tangible, but there is
another tool that can be beneficial for many people - embracing spirituality.
Exploring your spirituality can lead to a clearer life purpose and better
stress management skills.
4) Protect your time
How does your behavior contribute to your stress? Some people
find it hard to say no to any requests made on their time. But saying yes to
everything comes at a price - more stress and less peace of mind.
5) Restore work-life balance
Finding work-life balance in today's frantic world is
no simple task. Spend more time at work than at home and you miss out on a
rewarding personal life. Then again if you're facing challenges in your
personal life such as caring for an aging parent or coping with marital or
financial problems, concentrating on your job can be difficult.
Whether the problem is too much focus on work or too little,
when your work life and personal life feel out of balance, stress - plus its
harmful effects - is the result.
6) Meditation
Different types of meditation techniques can calm your mind and
reduce your stress. Concentration meditation involves focusing
your attention on one thing, such as your breathing, an image you visualize or
a real you look at - for example, a candle flame.
7) Keep your cool
Feeling stressed is normal. And so are setbacks in dealing with
stress. If you lapse into your old ways, don't give up. Focus on what you can
do to gain control of the situation.
Help keep your cool and lighten your load by remembering the
four As to managing stress: avoid, alter, adapt or accept.
8) Keep a strong social network
To help you through the stress of tough times, you'll need a
strong social support network made up of friends, family and peers. This
differs from a support group, which is generally a structured meeting run by a
mental health professional.
Although both groups can play an important role in times of
stress, a social support network is something you can develop when you're not
under stress, providing the comfort of knowing that your friends are there if
you need them. A coffee break with a friend at work, a quick chat with a
neighbor, a phone call to your sister, even a visit to church are all ways to
reduce stress while fostering lasting relationships with the people close to
you.

Fourth Quarter IT Hiring Outlook: The helpdesk is hot. -By Larry Dignan, Editor in Chief, ZDNet
Eleven percent of CIOs plan to add IT workers in the fourth quarter, 3 percent plan cuts and help desk and technical support are the hot categories as customer and user support trumps projects focused on growth.
Those are a few of the notable takeaways in an IT hiring and skills report from Robert Half Technology, a technology staffing firm.
Reading between the lines (statement) it appears that companies are working just as hard to keep customers and users happy as they are about acquiring new business. Indeed, 25 percent of the 1,400 CIOs surveyed said customer services and/or user support was the primary reason they were hiring IT staff. That's the first time since the second quarter of 2003 that support and service was the top priority. Twenty three percent of CIOs said business growth was the primary reason they were hiring in the fourth quarter with 21 percent citing new application development and installation. Overall, the Robert Half survey reveals that IT workers aren't facing a boom market, but things aren't unraveling either. Compared to other industries a little status quo is a win.
Here's a look at a few key charts:Helpdesk folks are en vogue followed by networking workers.
Network administration, Windows administration and desktop support were the top three skills in demand with at least 69 percent of CEOs citing those skills.

While Growth Rate Moderates, IT Employment Remains at Record Level -Released by NACCB
Alexandria, VA, October 8, 2008 - While the news in the general employment market in September ranged from dismal to dire, IT employment posted a modest increase and delivered another all-time high during the month, according to the National Association if Computer Consultant Businesses (NACCB), which tracks monthly IT employment. The association reported IT employment reached 3,925,600 in September, a record high. While the September gain of 3,600 (.1%) from the previous month was modest there were downward revisions of prior months reflecting the BLS downward adjustments), IT employment continues to display surprising resilience. From September 2007 through the current month, IT employment was up 4.9 percent---far outpacing the general employment market.
Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, Close
bosom-friend of the maturing sun; Conspiring with him how to load
and bless With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run; To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees, And fill all fruit
with ripeness to the core; To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel
shells With a sweet kernel; to set budding more, And still
more, later flowers for the bees, Until they think warm days will
never cease, For summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells.
Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy
store? Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find Thee sitting
careless on a granary floor, Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing
wind; Or on a half-reap'd furrow sound asleep, Drows'd with
the fume of poppies, while thy hook Spares the next swath and all
its twined flowers: And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
Steady thy laden head across a brook; Or by a cyder-press,
with patient look, Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.
Where are the songs of spring? Ay, where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music too, - While barred clouds
bloom the soft-dying day, And touch the stubble-plains with rosy
hue; Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn Among the
river sallows, borne aloft Or sinking as the light wind lives or
dies; And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft The red-breat whistles
from a garden-croft; And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.
