Client Hints & Tips
Three tips to hiring practitioners instead of ‘technician only’ types…
According to Mike Ziman, CEO Global CI
- 1. Look for Insight – during the technical interview process look for statements that indicate the candidate is
involved in the future of the technology at hand. “ABC company’s next release of the product is this Fall
and includes a fix for yada, yada, yada…” kind of statements indicate they are not satisfied with standing
still and they want to grow.
- 2. Sources of Information – find out what organizations, associations and user groups with which they
interact or receive information. What outside contacts do they have to consult, that may bring additional
knowledge to the table?
- 3. Goals – Does the candidate participate in ongoing education by getting certifications, attending
seminars / conferences, or using a form of book, online or CD library? Can they name authors or leaders
in their field of technology or even the specific segment of the technology? Have they been published?
Remember, this is in addition to technical prowess and personality. It is a little extra something
that strengthens a project, team and department. Practitioners also tend to care a great deal about
tackling problems with sustainable-reusable solutions and seeing projects through to its successful completion.
